On Sunday 25th Oct 2009 John Wright who the seasoned Carrickfergus Tourists among us will remember as John the night porter from Dobbins Inn sadly passed away.
John who for many a year would let the boys back in to Dobbins at all hours then serve up liquid refreshments sometimes even right up until breakfast time without as much as a grumble, a true gentlemen in every respect. He will be sadly missed.

| A Poem to Ponder Before Captains Day Libations | | 05-Jun-2009 10:26
 |
| By Robert Burns |
In honest Bacons ingle –neuk
Here Maun I sit and think,
Sick o’ the warld and warld’s folk,
An’ sick, damn’d sick, o’ drink.
I see I see there is nae help,
But still doun I Maun sink,
Till some day laigh enough I yelp:-
‘Wae worth that cursed drink!’
Yestreen, alas! I was sae fu’
I could but yist and wink;
And now, this day, sair I rue
The weary weary drink.
Satan, I fear thy sooty claws,
I hate thy brunstane stink,
And aye I curse the luckless cause,
The wicked soup o’ drink.
In vain I would forget my woes
In idle rhyming clink,
For, past redemption damn’d in prose,
I can do nought but drink.
To you my trusty well try’d friend,
May heaven on you still blink,
And may your life flow to the end,
Sweet as a dry man’s drink.
(To William Stewart by Robert Burns)

| April Fool |
It has been decided by the National 2nd XV League Administrator that due to fixture congestion and the need to complete our league games by 11th April that Saturdays fixtures are as follows
11am at Forrester - Forrester 2nd XV v Heriots 3rd XV
3pm at The Gyle - Forrester 2nd XV v Stew Mel 3rd XV
I have argued the point that this is unfair but have been informed that the decision stands.

| 2nd XV LEAGUE MATTERS | | 07-Feb-2009 09:00
 |
| A message from the Chairman of the 2nd XV League. |
"As chair of your organisation can I point out that there have been one or two results this season where the result, to a neutral, could be considered surprising. All clubs are reminded that, in the spirit of the game of rugby and of acting with integrity, where there is no 1st XV game no player who started the previous 1st XV game, no matter how long ago, may play save with the clear agreement of the opposition prior to KO.All players too must be registered with the club.
This issue keeps cropping up and is at once the strength and the weakness of our leagues.Club officials and team managers must ensure that all players are eligible."

| Sunday 9th - Head Wetting | | 05-Nov-2008 16:01
 |
|
Guys
This is a little invite for everyone, partners and kids included, to join Myself,
Caroline and Baby Lana for a few drinks at the Boroughmuir Rugby Club on Sunday
the 9th from around 2pm. I have met most of the players now and some partners and
thought it would be a good chance to meet some more and also for some to meet Caroline
and maybe 'Wet' llittle Lana's head too.
For the players we rarely get a chance to watch other teams play, as we all generally
play on a saturday and this sunday BMuir play Stirling and we will get a good view
of the game from the upstairs room that i have hired out. There will be an option
to go pitch side to take in the action but they may ask for an entrance fee (i will
try sort cheap rates for anyone on the day).
There will be a few Beers, Wines, Juices and Snacks for everyone and we would love
it if you can make it even for a short time. If you can let me know on thursday
or saturday so i can work out numbers, that would be great. Feel free to invite
other friends as the more the merrier and everyone is welcome (even Wee Al and Shunty)
Cheers M'Deers

| Andy, Dunkan and Sean Findlay Make Debut for The Cancer Research Crusaders, Sponge, Kev Weir and Ian Lee on for the Opposition |
By BILL LOTHIAN
BACK in the days when The Beatles were called The Quarrymen and a coach was what you travelled to a match in, a first-ever game of rugby cost me my two front teeth.
Move on nearly 50 years and now the game for hooligans played by gentlemen has just deprived me of any remaining shred of sporting dignity having been substituted in favour of an 83-year-old.
Except that this occurred on the opening day of the Air New Zealand World Golden Oldies Festival taking place in Edinburgh and where, as I discovered, all that really matters is living up to the slogan "Fun, Friendship and Fraternity."
Too many cooks spoil the broth, or so the proverb goes. But, when it comes to the furthest travelled team in the festival – all the way from the Cook Islands – then what is a bystander supposed to do when they are a "player" short?
The answer, of course, is to step into the breach which is how I found myself lining up alongside the likes of venerable dairy keeper Taringa Matenga and 68-year-old Sir Frederick Goodwin, Head of State and the Queen's Representative in that part of the South Pacific. We also had on board a scattering of Aussies from a team known as Knackered Bulls, from Townsville.
Our opposition were the Cancer Research Crusaders and, while they were drawn together to raise funds for that most estimable of causes, there was no charity out on the pitch as young and old galloped (okay waddled) about, determined to make the most of the occasion.
And why not? Golden Oldies Festivals only take place every two years with not a second to be wasted in what was a match like no other.
At one stage a try was disallowed after "too flash" a build up while it was incumbent on the official to provide a running commentary so as everyone knew that players wearing red shorts (60-64) could only be "claimed" while gold shorts signified no tackling at all was permitted.
All these innovations worked surprisingly well even for a reporter who'd gone along to, well, report and ended up playing. The icing on the cake was getting a deeper insight into just how good the "real" players are and seeing first-hand how dedicated the more social disciples can be.
Team-mate Maki, a retired bus driver, whose boss at the Raratonga Bus Company, Kevin, is also on the trip, explained: "To reach Edinburgh we flew four hours to Auckland then 32 hours to London via Singapore.
"When we arrived in England we'd missed our connection so we slept overnight in the airport lounge before reaching Edinburgh on Monday morning."
That such an odyssey was considered worthwhile was evident on the faces of my adopted team-mates including Sir Frederick, who proudly told his story.
He said: "After retiring as Chief of Police – I'm proud to say we have virtually no crime and only the occasional homicide every five to ten years – I embarked on the first of three spells so far as Head of State and Queen's Representative."The best bit of the job is serving my country and I was privileged to receive my knighthood in Wellington from the Prince of Wales while Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip kindly invited my wife and I to stay overnight in Windsor Castle a few years ago on the occasion of their golden wedding."
From sleeping in castles to airport corridors that's the beauty of rugby in bringing players old and young (well, 35 is the age-limit) together, and one player who celebrated becoming eligible with the first try of the festival early in the day was Mauricio Dias, a Chilean turning out for Aberdeen Strollers. It was an appropriate score with Strollers being the first Scots ever to play in a Golden Oldies Festival and Mauricio was ecstatic."I travelled 15,000 kilometres from my home in Conception, Southern Chile, to take up a rugby scholarship in Britain, eventually finding myself at Edinburgh University where my playing career was ended by a knee injury."I liked Edinburgh so much I stayed, completed a masters degree, and became a hotel manager. All the time I've been sending back notes and photographs from a great rugby country to Chile so that one day we might improve. To play again myself is a huge thrill."
Let me echo those sentiments after my boots were ceremoniously binned in 1996 following a match in the company of my son. Hopefully it won't be another 12 years before I venture across the touchline.
There seems to be room for everyone in Golden Oldies rugby – even us hacks – and, among those spotted at the other end of the scale were Wallaby legend Mark Ella and British Lions Gavin Hastings and Iain Paxton.
The next festival is planned for Sydney in 2010 and, who knows, the pain might even have subsided by then with the memory of a grand day out representing the Cook Islanders and Knackered Bulls guaranteed to live on.
As for the match score I suspect we lost – nobody was counting – but if we did who better to lose to than opponents who have each had the misfortune to be touched by cancer in some way?

Compliment bethanboo02 (09-11-2007)
This place I have to say was brilliant! I found myself stuck with twenty under elevens eight adults and nowhere to watch a Wales game. I phoned Forrester Rugby Club and not only did they let us all in, they also gave us a specific area in their club to watch the game from and made us feel really welcome. My friends from Wales left Edinburgh with a fantastic opinion of Scottish hospitality and good old fashioned kindness. I hear they have a pretty good rugby side too. So thanks if anybody from Forrester ever reads this.

| Scotland Rugby Savings Account | | 08-Jul-2008 18:35
 |
|
|
In the first partnership of its kind, Scottish Widows Bank and Scottish Rugby have launched a savings account which when opened, can directly support the growth of grass-roots rugby across Scotland.
Through this new commercial partnership, Scottish Widows Bank aims to support Scottish Rugby in their drive to increase the amount of rugby played in state secondary schools by making an annual donation of 0.4% of the total account holders balance.
This donation will help each school's Rugby Champion to buy personal coaching kits, provide specialist rugby equipment and expertise should the school reach levels of advanced participation.
Launching the account follows the success of Scottish Rugbys Rugby Champion pilot in the central region last year, where the number of affiliated rugby schools rose from 7 to 17, and the number of school teams has risen from 39 to 48 (23%) in just a single academic year.
With Rugby Champions now being rolled out across Scotland the initiative is expected to help take the number of Scottish state schools playing rugby from 184 to 300, over the next three years.
Rugby Champion Ambassador and Scotland back-row forward, Ally Hogg, welcomed the new account: "It is vital, for the future of Scottish rugby, that we support rugby at all levels and all ages to create more rugby opportunities for Scotlands state school children.
The Scotland Rugby Savings Account is a fantastic way for Scottish rugby fans to save money, earn interest and play their part in providing rugby opportunities for Scotlands state school children through a scheme that will not only benefit Scottish rugby but the whole of Scotland by encouraging more young people to be fit and active."
The Scotland Rugby Savings Account offers competitive interest rates of 5.25% for 6 months, easy access, internet banking and can be opened with as little as 100.
Graeme Hartop, Managing Director at Scottish Widows Bank said: Linking up with Scottish Rugby for the launch of the Scotland Rugby Savings Account is a way to further develop Scottish Widows Banks business but additionally help Scottish Rugby to develop grass-roots rugby in Scotland, whilst paying Scottish rugby supporters a competitive rate of interest on their savings.

| Season 2007/2008 | | 01-May-2008 10:20
 |
|
Last nights victory over relegated Grangemouth finally brings the curtain down on a season of highs and lows.
The 1st XV got off to a great start winning the first 5 league games of the season, but a mixture of bad weather and injuries took its tole and wevdrifted out of the promotion places. Currently we lie in 3rd spot with Highland requiring a bonus point win at Linlithgow to displace us. Over the past 2 years under the coaching of Dougie and Moff the club has been rejuvenated with in excess of 30 players at each training session and also winning promotion last year and being just one place off doing the same again this year. This has come to the attention of other clubs both this year and last with both Dougie and Moff having had offers to move to other coaching positions.Last year they turned the offers down, this year Moff decided that the Assistant Coach at Heriotts was to good a position to turn down and we wish him all the best in this venture. Thankfully Dougie has decided to stay with us for the time being and will be joined by Andy Knight.
The 2nd XV after winning the league last season and losing in the play off by a solitary point had a much tougher task this time round with the introduction of 3rd teams from Premiership clubs namely Watsonians, Stew Mels, Heriotts, Edinburgh University and Edinburgh Accies as it turned out from the 10 games against these teams we were only on the losing side on 3 occasions, which was in fact the only defeats suffered on league duty all season managing to beat all our existing opponents both home and away, thus winning the league again for the 3rd time in 4 years. The playoffs beckoned yet again and this time it was against Perthshire 2nds at Dunfermline, sadly we were turned over 27-10(enough said). Next season sees the current league structure change agin with the top 8 clubs plus Livingston and Murrayfield Wanderers 2nd XV's joining us.
The 3rd XV this year managed to play more games than they missed and considering that a lot of clubs have struggled to field 2 teams I think this stands us in good steed for next season when the 3rds will join the National 2nds League set up and go into the league formed from the teams from the 2nds league who finished outwith the top 8 and a few others who will be announced at a later date. Matt Evans took over the Match day running of the team mid season and has done a great job, thanks Matt. Next season we have around 9 colts coming up to swell the senior ranks which means more bodies available to make sure we put out a 3rd XV every week, then we can even start thinking about resurrecting the Rubies
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all players and coaching staff for their contributions both on and off the park this last 12 months and now we can now enjoy our repective end of season jaunts to both Carrickfergus and Belgium. Andy..

We need as many people at training on Thursday (excellant turn out on Tuesday evening)to give ourselves every opportunity to win this game.
The team will be chosen Thursday after training.
If for any reason the Kirkcaldy game does not go ahead we have alternative opposition in place.

At present Kirkcaldy have put a complaint into the chairman of the Scottish 2nd XV League regarding us asking for a postponement due to injuries and first team call ups. It is my belief that they are trying to claim the game on default.
Whatever happened to this gentlemens game, when teams decide to play a fair few first team players to try and score 239 points in two games or even better try to claim the game on a technicality.........shouldn't think Kirkcaldy should be frightened of us..........should they!!
Upshot is we are none the wiser to a playoff date if the game goes ahead at all.

 |
| Saturday 7th April 2007 |
This game has now been postponed by the League Committee as Kirkcaldy would not agree on their own.
This was done due to the number of injuries, call offs and call ups which depleted the 2nd taem squad.
The fixture is now scheduled for Saturday 28th April 2007.
The first team are playing against Musselburgh today kick off 2.30pm in the shield so if you were playing today you can now come along and give the boys your support.

| Training Session (light) |
The first team squad and guys that have been training regularly are away to Kelso for the week end so I thought it would be a good idea to get the 2nds down to the club for a session, ball handling/touch and try out the new calls and moves.
If there are enought players I will get a few cases of beer/lager/cider for afterwards.
meet at the club for 1pm.
Can you let me know ASAP if you are coming down.
Remember we are only 2 weeks away from our first game after Saturday.

| Changes In Management | | 01-Aug-2006 07:19
 |
|
This season George Middlemass has accepted the role of assisting me in the running of the team.
We were not the only team trying to get his services so I am delighted he chose us. His main functions will be helping choose the team and coordinating the team on a Saturday.
Andy.. |
|
| Training | | 18-Jul-2006 10:13
 |
| Saturday 22nd July 2006 |
So far in the last 2 weeks we have had seven 2nd team then three 2nd team players down to train.
This part of the season is the enjoyable part with ball handling and general fitness the main priority it gets you back into the swing of things and reaquaints you with your team mates.
It would be beneficial to both the team and the individual to attend training on the Saturdays prior to the games starting, we are limited to 20 players per game this season so there will be squad selection on a Thursday evening each week.
I will sign off with a relevant line.......out of sight out of mind.....make sure that doesnt refer to you.

| Senior Training Starts This Saturday For All Teams. |
1pm Meet.
The coaches want all teams to use the same lineout codes, moves etc. With the 1st XV stepping up to Division 3, the 2nd XV having gained promotion and the Falcons pushing for places in both teams, it is crucial that as many players as possible attend training to ensure that players can move between teams as seamlessly as possible.
The Coaches will be putting the time in - Make sure you do!

On behalf of the 2nd team I would like to wish them good luck in their new positions.

| End of Season | | 08-May-2006 11:41
 |
|
I am afraid that the season did not end as we would have liked it to as we failed to retain the league title. We were beaten on Saturday by a very strong Edinburgh University side.
Rather than dwelling on this defeat I would like to thank you all for your time and effort this season and hope you enjoyed it as much as I have.
Next season we hope to be playing in the national 2nd team leagues which will mean stronger opposition for us to test ourselves against, I believe with the players we have we will cause a few surprises against the bigger teams.
I AM GOING TO ARRANGE TRAINING 1 NIGHT A WEEK FOR THE 2NDS NEXT SEASON AS I FEEL THE STEP UP IN LEAGUES WILL MERIT IT.
Have a good summer.

| Forrester 36-24 Edinburgh University |
This week we had a top of table clash against Edinburgh University at Forrester. We knew they would be full of confidence after their 104-0 win over Edinburgh Northern and hoping to add our scalp to their collection.
The game started well for us and we raced into a 14 point lead midway through the first half which ended 19-7 in our favour at the break.
Injuries to our scrum half Vas and hooker Levi disrupted the continuity of our play and allowed Edinburgh back into the game they then went ahead 24-19. We then managed to patch up Vas (4 tries) and Levi thanks to Florence (Amanda) Nightingale and return them to the match, and with their contribution and some wonderful kicking from Ross leitch we triumphed 36-24 and returned to top of the table.
