The RAF have sponsored our Colts team for season 2010/ 2011 and presented the team with a full set of playing kit.

RAF Sponsorship 10-Jun-2010 05:44
'A chance meeting in a local gym between one of the Club's 'veteran' players Garry McLoughlin'and Sgt Scott Deuchars, RAF Careers Motivational Outreach Team resulted in our U18 team being provided with a complete new set of strips through the RAFs sports token scheme.
Recognising the good work being done by React 2 Rugby and also the Club to develop youth in west Edinburgh the RAF intimated they are keen to support and integrate with R2R's activities.
The jerseys were formally handed over by Flt. Lt. Jim Thomson to Bill Smith.
After the presentation, Sgt Deuchars organised a selected group of the youth team to undergo mentally and slightly physically challenging exercises in the Club's carpark. Despite trying to get them to think outside the box, it would be fair to say that Sgt. Deuchars had to 'enlighten' the team as to how to successfully complete the exercises.
R2R and the youth team are very grateful to the RAF for their sponsorship and support of the the Trust's and Club's activities.
We look forward to a deep and continuous relationship with them.

Forrester RFC have now been delivering sessions to Craigmount High School students for several years. In recent times we have enjoyed exciting sessions which the students look forward to. There has been delivery from S1 through to Higher PE at S5 / S6 with enthusiasm clear from both coaches and students.

All sessions incorporate the latest developments in Rugby and education with Curriculum for Excellence being a focal point. This relationship has had a direct impact on the quality of Rugby being demonstrated by Craigmount students with selections at regional and national level being achieved.

Our main source of feedback in schools comes from the learners, and it is clear that the programs we have in place are successful.

Well, the audience may have been much smaller than was originally intended, but they were treated to one of the finest nights of entertainment I have had the pleasure of witnessing.

Right from the start you could feel that it was going to be a great night. Our caterers (Andrew Sherlock, Blackridge, West Lothian) once again turned out food of the highest order. Not only were the portions fantastic (Craig Pake admitting defeat at his 6th trifle!) but the waitress service was cheerful and good humoured!

A quick raffle (thanks to those who donated prizes) was followed by our first speaker Joe Smith, Edinburgh Northern. Now Joe is a maths teacher (or as he says, he tries to teach sums) at St Augustines. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the geography of St Augustines and Forrester RFC, we are only 100 yards apart across the school playground. Joe had to ask for directions how to get to the Clubhouse!!! In his defence he has only been teaching there for 3 years. We could not have asked for a finer speaker to warm up the audience. With his own inimitable style he kept us (and the bar staff and witresses) amused and entertained. Suddenly the evening was getting better and I was starting to think, this has the makings of a very good dinner.

A quick auction of certain donated items raised hard needed cash followed by our own VP calling out the Irish Bingo numbers. The winner was having his first taste of a rugby dinner and certainly appeared to be enjoying himself.

On the programme I had listed Andre Chevalier, Stade de Halkirk as the next speaker but just like last year, he failed to trap. However, in true Club spirit he was replaced by our own Andy Knight, a distant cousin of Msr. Chevalier. If you believe that then you are really thick! Andy has his own style of delivery which he put over in his far north (Halkirk)brogue and was more than an adequate replacement for the absentee Msr. Chevalier.

The remaining auction items were sold and my personal thanks to those who donated them (either in person or via their organisations). Our coffers were filled greatly after the auction.

The final speaker (Bill Nolan) has a reputation on the circuit as being a man who travels the world telling rugby and sporting stories and also has a great involvement with Scottish rugby. Given that the IRB 7's were on that day at Murrayfield and he was attending the 7's as the Scottish representative of the IRB I wondered if perhaps we were not being a bit too optimistic in asking him to speak at the dinner.

Those of us who were at the dinner can now say in sincere honesty that this man was the 'icing on the cake'. Rarely, have I heard such a polished and professional performance. The truth being that he could have spoken for hours on end, regaling us with humorous incidents, stories that had you laughing or crying and also able to do quick fire responses to the very good natured banter around the hall.

React 2 Rugby would like to thank our caterers and bar staff but most of all, we are greatly indebted to Joe Smith, Andy Knight and Bill Nolan for making this such a memorable evening.

Penicuik/Dalkieth and Harrogate

Win

Forrester took on the might of the North of England and a sprightly Penicuik/Dalkieth side.

The first game saw the S1/S2 take on the local talent from Midlothian. Forrester kicked long and the visitors failed to deal with the ball which was bouncing unpredictably off the hard turf. Cammy - W gathered near the line to open the scoring.

From the tap restart Forrester showed good line defence and co-ordinated aggression to force a mistake by Penicuik almost immediately. Cammy quick reactions saw him tidy up the loose ball, showing perfect presentation skills. This intelligent play allowed Aaron – M to romp through some week defence to score.

Penicuik had woken up and had some good skills. Their right wing ran strongly exploiting week defending and after setting up good quick ball. They moved it through a couple of hands to score between the sticks.

The coaches were pleased with Forresters improvement in the scrum (Aaron, Keron & Cammy showing great shape) and contact (Josh & Michael doing what the boiler house should) and the obvious efforts the lads were putting in to produce the skills they have been practicing.

The coups de gras backs and forwards working together. Hard work from the forwards saw the ball carried forward, producing quick ball, the backs had the vision and ability to move the ball wide for Jamie to release George who showed good speed and strength to go over in the corner.

When you get it right you get it right and Daniel presented a ball beautifully, this allowed the forwards to clear the ball and with Jamie drawing in the backs he released Keron to romp home.

There was lots of good rugby played by the boys, they are progressing well on this showing.

Game 2 against Harrogate 1

Loss

This was a sterner test altogether, Harrogate were up for it from the start and both teams cancelled each other out in the early exchanges. The competition for the ball was fierce with both teams rucking, the visitors entering from the side from time to time however slightly lower and explosive.

Forrester were trying hard to gain some continuity and were trying to offload out of the tackle. This was very encouraging to all the coaching staff as this is what we desire and it was unfortunate that the visitors 2 tries came from an offload going astray and Harrogate launching a quick counterattack. Breaking the sparse defence and weak tackling. I say unfortunate as we do not want this to prevent this type of creative play in future games.

Forrester had an equal proportion of the ball and the scrum continued to fair well with (Kevin & Alex showing good body position). The backs ran hard but struggled to get fully on the front foot.

I was happy after this game, we were playing a team which had won through to the semi final of their county competition and were a good side. We need to play this type of game for we always learn more from a sterner test.

Game 3 Harrogate 2

Draw

Again the greenies went at it hard there were little difference in the teams and Forrester lost a try early when trying to offload and not making the connection. I was not worried, as I have said to many you will not be criticised for trying to do some of the things we are trying to develop.

The contact, the scrums, the passing all shows just how far we have come, the secret it to see how for we can go.

We were a little high in some mauls, need to recognise a hammer ball and what to do and run onto the ball.

Suddenly from a free kick Cammy hits the ball on the run, completes a successful offload out the tackle and Brad ghosts over to level the scores.

Forrester then started to exercise some control and after good work Daniel who tried hard all afternoon went over to put the greens in the lead.

I thought that we had the measure of this team; however they were good with nice skills and some strong runners. They hammered at the Forrester line and some tenacious tackling kept the visitors out. It was in the end in vain and their strong No.8 now playing centre that breached the green line.

I have not mentioned many that deserve a mention, they fall into the bracket of player that is intelligent enough to know that it is not always what you do when you have the ball but what you do when you do not have the ball.

THIS TEAM GROWS UNITED AND STRONGERWITH EVERY GAME, THE GREEN LINE GROWS STRONGER WITH EVERY GAME, THE GREEN JERSEY IS FILLED WITH A FITTER STRONGER INDIVIDUAL WITH EVERY WEEK, THE PLAYER BECOMES LESS GREENER TO THE GAME WITH EVERY WEEK, THE OPPOSITION BECOMES GREEN WITH ENVY WITH EVERY WIN AND THE GREEN MACHINE GETS BETTER WITH EVERY YEAR.

Forrester S1 and S2 Up for a Challenge07-Feb-2010 21:41
Forrester versus Heriots

As I drew up and walked into Goldenacre, I was transported back to my childhood days when I first played this fantastic game. It was a typical dewy February morning, slightly overcast, not cold, perfect for running rugby and the city pulsing with Six Nations fever.

The players were already warming up in preparation to take on Heriots, a team we knew would move the ball and would have good skills. However we were pretty confident our skills were improving and we could give them a run for their money.

We were playing on the big pitch, it was always big when I played on it, thought it would be daunting to the lads but they just took it in their stride.

The initial exchanges were good and Forresters handling skills were standing up well. All the weeks of practice saw them moving the ball through 1st receivers hands quickly, exploiting the space and making good lines breaks. It was Forresters decision making and rucking technique that prevented them from taking advantage of the good play. Heriots however had no problem with their finishing and worked two tries in the first half. The Greenies heads did not drop and they responded with some beautiful simple rugby (the best kind) – Blair moved the ball quickly to Jamie who in concert with Brad released Adam Millar to outstrip the Heriots defence and spot down between the posts.

The second half saw both teams having a real go at each other, both willing to spread the ball at every opportunity. Forrester were just edged in the close quarter exchanges and like the national side out scrummed. The scoring was much like the same as the first half with Heriots crossing twice and Forrester replying with a try which encouragingly involved both the forwards and backs. After a positive run by brad, connecting with George and good work by Josh, Connor, Michael, Aaron and Cameron. Rory Notman drove over to score.

As a coach I was delighted to see the marked improvement in the handling of all the players and the desire showed by the players. We will need to work on the break down area and the scrum – at least we know and you can expect some fun combat on Wed. Finally we were as good as Heriots even given the loss and the future looks bright is this team continues to work hard at their skills.

Falkirk Vs Forrester

This game was a different kettle of Fish altogether. Falkirk sported a large pack who were always going to test the Green pack. Forrester had the creativity and hands to take them on, all they needed was the ball. Unfortuneately the forwards did not have the ball in the early exchanges with Falkirks big pack driving the ball upfield and an offside at the ruck gave them very good field position in the corner. The resulting line out saw a rehearsed move and Falkirk crashed over. Forrester needed ball, however restarted by running straight at Falkirks strength and ultimately relinquishing possession. This resulted in the Falkirk driving up field and scoring in the corner.

Forrester were struggling to get a foot in the game, however the tireless working forwards won some ball and immediately the greens backs put it to good use and after a break and offload by Brad, Adam Millar was released to romp home.

The second half was better from the Forrester forwards and they produced some more ball. Forrester also crafted the try of the match, from a poor ball going back the ball was moved to Blair who showed beautiful composure under pressure and moved the ball through his hands, Jamie held the inside defence releasing Brad who just had to connect with Yes Adam Millar who cut the line at pace to gallop under the sticks. Adam got up to convert his try.

Falkirk scored twice in the second half again through their forward power, however Forrester had begun to play the style of rugby they have been aiming for and produce a peach of a try. With a poor heal, Scottie passed the ball to Bob/Andrew? Keron (not sure if I have this right) realising the need for width Bob exploded of his right leg (straight of the training field) and pushed a long accurate pass out to Jamie who was creative all afternoon and he made a lovely break to release Yes Again Adam Millar to scurry over for his hat trick.

Forrester forwards are to be commended for their grit and determination and they kept Falkirk out at the end of the match. Forrester were unlucky to not win after another tremendously creative break by Jamie and offload to Tony who whizzing down the touchline was brought back for a forward pass.

I have not mentioned every player in this report and all the guys who played put in a fantastic effort, we have much to take out of these games and will begin the fun of developing our other skills over the next few weeks.

We play Falkirk again next week so lets see you all on Wed.

FORRESTER S2 VERSUS FALKIRK26-Jan-2010 12:53
SUN 24TH JAN 2010
click to view full image for : FORRESTER S2 VERSUS FALKIRK

The sledges are packed away and the snow has melted. Rugby is back – being played on pitches all across Scotland . Even after the snow the night before, which had melted away and left the ground heavy and the air cold. The Greenies S2 team took to the field, may with chattering teeth and folded arms and although not visible the odd cobweb or two. A minutes silence was observed for one of rugby’s greats Bill McLaren.

The game started with both teams making mistakes, however there was plenty of effort being expended. Falkirk had the best of the opening exchanges, progressing up down field with their larger pack and strong running back.

This pressure paid dividends and Falkirk opened the scoring. Rugby is a simple game and doing the simple things really well is the key to success. Forrester were loosing the ball in contact, not having enough support thus being driven off the ball, taking the ball standing still in the backs and taking quick penalties and running straight at their opposition’s strength. They needed someone to kick start them from their slumber and it came in the form of Cameron Walker who picked from a ruck and ran straight at the 10 channel, showing great feet agility to avoid his tacklers and charge half the length of the field to score. This try seemed to waken Forrester up a bit and they began to exert pressure right away and after some scrappy error strewn play Forrester forwards won a good ruck and the ball was moved left. The pass had gone to ground, but Anthony Gilchrist was onto it like a flash and demonstrated a lovely out side run to strip the defence to score.

Half time brought and opportunity for the Greens to regroup and plan there second half tactics. We agreed keep it simple and that’s exactly what the team did. The first 10 minutes of the second half saw some tremendous running rugby. Forrester ran hard at Falkirk and had learnt from the mistakes of the first half with the support on immediate hand to clear out the ruck. The ball was moved quickly through Blair’s hands at first receiver, finding Aaron Mason lurking in the back division, who exploited the space created by his team mates and with a dummy and strength forced his way over.

You always felt if Forrester could get quick ball and move it through first receivers hands quickly enough they would be dangerous. Well this new found confidence was to be taken advantage of and the Green Machine were at it almost immediately. A strong run up field by the forwards with close support ensuring quick ball led to Falkirk coming in from the wrong side and a penalty to Forrester. This was quickly taken and having learned from the mistakes in the first half they moved the ball away from Falkirk ’s strength. Releasing the strong running Jamie Summers who found Adam Millar who romped home for the try of the game. The scorer adding the conversion.

Falkirk were not going to lie down and their efforts should be recognised there forwards kept taking the game to Forrester and were well complemented by one of their strong running backs. They moved up field after Forrester gave away a penalty, kicking into the corner and winning the lineout. There bigger pack pounded the Forrester line and eventually breached the defence for a converted try.

As Forrester regrouped behind the line with me emploring to accept the referees decision and go back playing the game that had been so successful in the first 10 minutes of the second half. There discipline is to be admired and they returned to attacking ways, exerting pressure on their opposition. It was not long before they had won a good ruck ball which Blair moved through his hands quickly releasing the impressive Jamie Summers who showed good balance, pace, agility to burn the defence and fly in for the score.

This report mentions all the scorers and not the members of the team who play such an important part in the game. Let me assure you that without your contribution the tries would have not been scored, rugby is a fantastic team game that needs all players to co-operate and once we fully understand we will undoubtedly win more games than we lose. Remember there is no I in TEAM .

BURNS SUPPER

If the objective of a Burns Supper is for folk to enjoy themselves then this one certainly did.
For many it was their first supper, however I am confident they will be keen to go to others.
We were honoured to have a vey distinguished line up of speakers and entertainers for the evening.
Ian Caldwell (Peebles RFC and Dumfries Burns Howf Club) kicked off with the Selkirk Grace.
After a hearty plate of Cock a Leekie, young Andrew Brown (Craigmount High School Pipe Band)
swaggered into the hall piping in the haggis carried by Stevie Kilpatrick and followed by our 'Firestone' chef, Bill Smith.
Max Downie (Currie RFC and Balerno Burns Club) gave the  address to the haggis, however when in
full flight and about to slice the haggis apart, he could not remove the knife from the haggis. Max added a few impromptu words
(both of them choice) to his address, much to the merriment of the company.
The tables were well attended to by both Dianes and their families and they quickly served up the remainder
of the bill of fare.

Ian gave the 'Immortal Memory'. Bearing in mind there were few 'Burn's purists' around he found exactly
the right tone and the audience really appreciated a piece of modern day poetry. A link to the poem is attached

Our own Colin Bradford was next up to propose the toast to the lasses. His carefully prepared toast was ripped up
and thereafter he 'winged it'. Just like he does on the park! We were treated to 15 minutes of Colin's romances and love life
(or lack of it!) finishing off with his personal poem and his current relationship 'wi a granny!'

Jenny McLean replied on behalf of the world's downtrodden women and did not miss Colin or the male species.
She mentioned that in Burn's day, if women were not happy with their men then they never had the benefit of
shops like Ann Summers!

Max was next up with a lovely version of 'To a mouse!' Fortunately this time he did not have to add any extra words!

He was followed by Kenny Blyth and Ross Davidson who gave their version of 'My love is like a red red rose'.
It is hard to believe that this is a new song to them both and the audience certainly showed their appreciation.

Dressed in auld Scots garb our next poet (Frank Sibbald, Leith Accies RFC) had the audience in the palm of his hands when
he gave his unique version of 'Tam O' Shanter'. More than one person remarked ' how did he remember all these verses
without a prompt. He may be getting older but as yet he is not suffering from dementia!

Kenny and Ross followed up with 'Ae Fond Kiss' once again to loud applause from an appreciative audience.

Jenny McLean introduced some audience participation and got them to sing 'How many legs has a haggis?'
This amusing ditty never did provide an answer to the question but it left some of our visitors from 'south of the border' wondering
just exactly 'what is a haggis?'

Yours truly recited a poem about a 'talking parking meter called Peter'.

The evenings entertainment was finished off by Kenny and Ross leading the hall in Dougie McLean's 'Caledonia'.

Auld Lang Syne was heartily led by lan.

React 2 Rugby and the Forrester Youth Section would like to thank all our speakers, entertainers, caterers, serving staff and those attending
the function for their time and generous financial support. Hopefully we can plan ahead for next year for another Supper.

Moran Taing, John Gunderson.

Forrester U18 v Gala Wanderers U1826-Mar-2009 00:55

Forrester 33 Gala Wanderers 22

Saturday saw a lovely day for rugby greet the teams at Union Park . The home side had lost some players to the 1sts and 2nds, however still had a reserve on the touchline.

It was the home side that came out the changing room with the better tempo and immediately began to recycle some quick ruck ball.

An early lineout in Forresters half saw good pressure applied at the front of the line by Colin Dunlop, forcing the visitors to palm. Hooker Aidan Beveridge needed no invitation and was through, great off load to 2nd Row Shaun Hardie who showed soft hands to realease Craig Morrison No 8. Craig linked with Neil Robertson who distributed accurately to Robbie Douglas. Ball recycled and moved back for a score. This score was right out the top drawer for me, you can’t get better than backs and forwards interacting with pace and accuracy on execution.

This was evident for most of the first 20 mins and Gala struggled to get in the game.

Tries from Wing Robbie Douglas (thorn in Galas side all game), Wing Forward Colin Dunlop (starting at 6 for the first time this season),  a brace from Full Back Euan Higgins (yet another outstanding performance). Centre Neil Robertson adding a penalty and conversion. Captain Murray Johnstone and Neil Robertson distribution was excellent .

Gala answered with a break away try after an interception.

Half time Forrester 25 Gala 7.

Not surprisingly in the second half things slowed down, Forrester fitness and Galas determination having an impact on the game. Even the introduction of Chris Anderson at Wing Forward was not enough although he would have a hand in Forresters final try Gala had the better of the second half with three tries to Forresters reply from wing Robbie Douglas completing his brace. I should mention that there are many unsung heroes not named in this report, however whos contribution can not be under estimated. As I said in the changing room you need GUYS TO DO THE NITTY GRITTY and without them tries will never be scored.

This game undoubtedly brought a smile to all the coaches faces and I am sure like me I appreciated the effort that had been made.

Report Card of Forrester Colts V Gala Wanderers

As with all report cards I will start with the good and end with the good, nice pupil, needs to realise their potential and should keep up the effort.

Those parents out there will recognise the later half of the previous sentence in todays society, as educations speak for needs a good kick up the backside.

Handling – Standards continue to be very high. High completion rate in all areas of the field. Great interaction between all team members. Knowledge of type, pace and timing of pass is in the upper quarter of quality. I feel confident an A pass can be achieved in this area.

Scrum/Line Out – High level of success was achieved throughout the game. Scrum Defence is still an issue but will be looked at in  the future. All should continue to maintain and develop their techniques to strive for a 100% success rate on own ball. Projected mark A/B

Backs Attack – Probably the greatest improvement of all. Always looked a threat, skills levels high and quality of tries scored excellent. I would have projected a C but this recent improvement has adjusted my assessment and would predict B is definitely achievable with an A not discounted should this i
